2017’s Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures May Be a Surprise
The age of selfies is upon us, and the cosmetic industry is booming. Social media has magnified the emphasis we put on our appearances to such a degree that changing the way we look to fit our ideal image of beauty has never been easier or more affordable. It's also become less taboo, in part thanks to social media influencers who document their journeys through cosmetic and plastic surgeries.
Top 5 Most Popular Cosmetic Procedures in 2017
In 2017, an impressive 17.5 million cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States. Some of the top procedures have held high rankings for decades, while others have only recently found their way into the spotlight. The top five cosmetic procedures performed in 2017 were:
- Breast Augmentation
- Nose Reshaping (Rhinoplasty)
- Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
- Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
For many people, eyelid surgery is the most surprising surgery to make the top list, said Dr. Mayli Davis, an ophthalmologist and founder of Advanced Eyelid Surgery Center in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area.
"The windows are the eyes to the soul, as the saying goes, but they're also usually the first thing people look at when they see you," she said. "Eyelid surgery is one of the least invasive cosmetic surgeries, contrary to what you would think, and it can improve vision and the appearance of aging drastically."
In 2017, there were 209,571 eyelid surgeries, or blepharoplasties, performed in the United States alone.
5 Fastest-Growing Cosmetic Procedures in 2017
In the 2017 annual report published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, some procedures showed a drastic growth in popularity when compared to numbers from the year 2000. While top procedures like rhinoplasty actually saw a decrease over the last 17 years, other procedures saw huge increases in popularity.
The top five fastest-growing procedures are:
- Upper Arm Lift
- Lower Body Lift
- Buttock Lift
- Tummy Tuck
As the trends show, thanks to technological and medical advances, lifting almost all parts of the body has become possible in recent years. Full-body makeovers have soared in popularity along with lifting the parts of the body that one may struggle with most, such as the arms or buttocks.
"Dermabrasion is something that people are still learning about, and the data shows it's also becoming a very popular procedure," said Davis. "It involves scraping away the top layers of the skin to remove scars, wrinkles and other imperfections the patient may want erased."
Every year the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons releases this data on the number of cosmetic surgeries and non-invasive procedures performed for the year.
