The winter can be brutal on skin. Cold weather, harsh winds and dry air from heaters can rob skin of much-needed moisture and leave it dry, red and irritated. Protect your skin this winter with these five winter skin care tips from Dr. Davis.
Choosing the right moisturizer is just as important as moisturizing often. Here at Advanced Eyelid Surgery Center we carry some of the top skin care products recommended by Dr. Davis. When choosing a product be sure to look for oil-based moisturizers as opposed to water-based, and avoid any products with petroleum-based ingredients.
2. Skip the Hot Water
Although it can be extremely relaxing to take a hot shower in the coldest months of the year, the hot water can dry out skin and strip it of its natural oils. Instead, use lukewarm water whenever possible, especially when it comes to your face and hands. Be sure to moisturize skin while it is still damp to lock in the moisture.
3. Get a Humidifier
One of the reasons for dry skin in the winter is the dryness in the air thanks to heating systems. This can wreak havoc on the skin of the entire body. In addition to moisturizing frequently, using a humidifier can help put much-needed moisture back in the air.
4. Eat and Drink Right
Sure it's a good idea to eat a healthy diet and drink lots of water all year long, but the right diet and staying hydrated can really help skin in the winter months. Keeping skin hydrated starts from the inside, so make sure you're drinking the recommended amount of water for your age and weight. Try to choose foods high in vitamin c and zinc, which are natural skin helpers thanks to their contribution to the production of collagen and elastin.
It may seem like a bad idea to exfoliate in the winter, especially if you're already suffering from dry skin. But skin retains moisture better when the dry skin is removed. A gentle exfoliation followed by a generous moisturizing session can do wonders for winter skin woes.
