How Sleep Deprivation Can Affect Your Eyes

Sleep deprivation is something that most people know well. Many individuals are likely at their desks right now wishing that they had gotten more sleep the night before. However, there are many more issues that lack of sleep can have on a person than just mental exhaustion. While many can note the mental and emotional effects that an individual faces from sleep deprivation, most can see physical impacts, too. Anyone can read signs of tiredness on an individual's face. Some of these adverse effects can include dark circles and tired, puffy eyes.

Negative Effects on Eye Health

When an individual doesn't get enough sleep, the eyes don't have as much time to heal themselves properly. In turn, the eyes may become dry, itchy, or even bloodshot. When the eyes are dry and not protected by tears, eye infections may have the ability to sneak in. If a lack of sleep is something that a person experiences regularly, it is possible for serious eye issues to occur, including glaucoma. Glaucoma is a condition where pressure builds up in the eyes and can lead to vision loss over time.

Although not many people are aware, sleep apnea can be a risk factor in eye health, leading to glaucoma. By looking for changes in the eye during an eye exam, doctors may decipher if a person is suffering from sleep apnea. Luckily, when treated, any eye symptoms caused by this issue can be reversed.

Get the Sleep You Need

Since sleep is vital for an individual's health, including their eyes, we suggest the following tips to help get the proper amount of sleep that your body needs.

  • Create a regular sleeping schedule.
  • Wind down before bedtime and dim the lights if possible to signal that it is time to calm the brain.
  • Keep the bedroom as dark as possible so as not to let light disturb you during sleep.
  • Exercise regularly as early in the day as possible.
  • Try not to eat at least three hours before bed.
  • Keep the A/C cool when going to sleep.
  • Use a fan or other item as a source of white noise.
