How Thyroid Issues Can Effect Your Eyes

Did you know that the thyroid can affect every single part of the body, including the eyes? You can have eye problems that are a product of certain thyroid disorders like Graves Disease, Hypothyroidism, and Hyperthyroidism. Those who have eye issues caused by an over or underactive thyroid can face a challenging condition that can affect their confidence and health.

The Thyroid's Part In the Body

The thyroid is one of the largest endocrine glands in the entire body and can be found in the neck approximately at the Adam's apple. The thyroid is responsible for how fast or slow the body can burn off energy, make proteins, and control the body's sensitivities to hormones. To diagnose the different conditions that the thyroid affects, thyroid tests and bloodwork may need to be done.

Graves Disease

For those who do not know, Graves Disease is an autoimmune disease that affects the thyroid. This disease can cause the thyroid to grow up to two times its average size and become overactive. Graves Disease can affect the eyes by making them bulge out, which is called exophthalmos.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid does not produce enough of the thyroid hormone. The symptoms of this condition are:

  • Dry Skin
  • Slow Heart Rate
  • Cold Sensitivity
  • Depression
  • Infertility
  • Slow Heart Rate

Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is an overproduction of the thyroid hormone. The symptoms of someone who may have this condition are:

  • Fast Heart Rate
  • Bulging Eyes
  • Nervousness
  • Muscle Weakness
  • Decreased Menstrual Flow
  • Weight Loss
Thyroid Eye Disease

The condition of thyroid eye disease is where the eye muscles, including the tear glands, muscles, and tissues of the eye, become inflamed and push forward the eyes. For those who have a thyroid eye disease, the symptoms may be as follows:
