Lagophthalmos

We treat patients who have the inability to properly close their eyes and blink. This condition is called lagophthalmos. This may occur, for instance, in patients with Thyroid eye disease. Issues with the facial nerve cause this condition. This impedes the ability to blink and blinking is critical to the function and health of the eye. Tears keep the eye clear of foreign bodies. Additionally, the blink reflex and lid position which are maintained by the facial nerve, also are critical to maintain the ocular surface as each blink spreads the tear film over the ocular surface and allows for a continuous layer of moisture. Lagophthalmos can lead to serious eye damage.
