The Break Down: Microdermabrasion

Many people have the desire to look younger or have clearer, firmer skin, free of blackheads scars or age spots without taking the more drastic measures of chemical peels or facelifts. Microdermabrasion offers a safe, nontoxic way of delivering many of these desired results. Microdermabrasion is one of many skin beautifying treatments offered by Advanced Eyelid Surgery Center in Colleyville and Ft. Worth, Texas.

The idea behind microdermabrasion is that by abrading the skin and buffing away the stratum corneum, the deeper layers of the skin are freer to absorb the moisturizing and nourishing active ingredients in medicinal lotions and creams that would ordinarily not be absorbed past the stratum coneum that acts as a barrier to irritants and environmental toxins.

The body interprets the abrasions in the stratum corneum as minor injuries, and sends oxygenated red blood cells to replace the lost skin cells and rebuilds a fresh layer of new skin. Once regrown, this new layer of skin is often free of fine lines, dark spots, and scarring that were there previously.

Our estheticians use a special tool that is like a tiny sandblaster that shoots a stream of tiny salt and sodium bicarbonate crystals at the skin while simultaneously suctioning away those that have already touched the skin carrying away blackheads and other toxins trapped in the skin. Once the dermabrasion is complete, we apply nourishing essential oils, moisturizers, or medicinal creams that are chosen to meet your skin’s specific needs as it begins the regrowth cycle.

Following microdermabrasion treatment, it is normal for the skin to appear shiny or red, and some patients will feel a mild itching sensation. Usually the redness will subside somewhere between 2 hours and 2 days and the new layer of skin will have regrown in 5-8 days. Because of this, it is important to plan microdermabrasion treatments approximately 2 weeks out from any planned events where you expect to be photographed or will need to apply heavy makeup.
