Winter usually means cold, winds, and changes in humidity. Winter also usually brings along the condition known as winter skin. Winter skin and its telltale itching, dryness, and flaking plague many people each year, but with a few tips from Dr. Davis and a solid skin care routine, you can keep your skin looking and feeling great all year long.

Stay hydrated. One of the best ways to keep your skin looking great is to make sure you are drinking enough water. Eight glasses of water a day should be your target to in order to keep your skin supple, elastic, and fresh.

Increase humidity Outside elements like cold winter air and wind are very drying, but turning up the thermostat inside also contributes to winter skin because it reduces the humidity inside your home. You can add humidity back to your habitat by using a plugin, portable humidifier during the winter months, or having a humidifier installed on to your heating system.

Temper your shower temperature Hot baths and showers are often a favorite way to warm up in the winter, but very hot water temperatures, coupled with soaps, scrubs, and shower gels can leave your skin clean but cause dryness. Look for high-quality moisturizing soaps and gels, and use warm – not hot – water. Also, use a moisturizing lotion after bathing while skin is still damp to hydrate your skin.

Mind your moisturizer Switch to oil based, emollient moisturizer to lock in moisture. Water based moisturizers evaporate quickly in dry months, taking your skin’s moisture with them. For your face, take care to use a high quality, high moisturizing product with hyaluronic acid in order maintain your skin’s collagen and elastin. This helps prevent cracking, creasing, and the development of wrinkles.

Still use sunscreen The sun still comes out in the winter time, so yes, you still need sunscreen to protect your skin. Look for a broad spectrum, SPF 30 sunscreen to help block out the ultraviolet UVA rays that are stronger late in the year.
