There are many types of skin rejuvenation treatments on the market for patients seeking to rejuvenate their skin. These treatments include FotoFacial, microdermabrasion and injectable fillers and while they all have their benefits, but there’s another available product out there that’s gaining traction in the Med Spa world. This product is Derma Pen, and it is beginning to dominate the cosmetic skin therapy world.

Derma Pen is a type of minimally invasive micro needling skin therapy that rejuvenates the skin. It is also known as collagen induction therapy. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Collagen is especially important to the skin as it helps the skin hold its structure – a quality that is important in preventing wrinkling and creases. The Derma Pen uses multiple tiny microneedles, spring loaded and housed in a pen like case to puncture the skin in order to signal the body to produce new collagen to heal these tiny holes. Through this process, skin texture and firmness improve, and many patients experience a reduction in the size of their pores, as well as see the appearance of their scars and stretch marks improve.

The microneedles of the Derma Pen pierce the skin up to several hundred times per minute. Derma Pen and micro needling are used to boost skin rejuvenation in a way that is safe, and does not require a lengthy recovery period. The Derma Pen is adjustable to use over the entire face, including sensitive areas like the nose, and around the mouth.

Dr. Mayli Davis, M.D., is a Colleyville, Texas, ophthalmologist who offers Derma Pen and other Med Spa skin rejuvenating procedures to her patients.

“Derma Pen is becoming a popular option for patients,” Davis said. “It requires a very minimal recovery period and yields great results. This combination makes it high in demand.”

It is also able to meet the needs of many patients. Individuals seeking Derma Pen treatment do so for a wide range of reasons.

“Some patients want to look younger, while others want to treat areas of hyperpigmentation, sunspots, scars or stretch marks,” Davis said”. For some patients, skin conditions make them feel self-conscious, or embarrassed. Acne scars especially cause patients to feel embarrassed, and as a result, patients avoid social situations, public appearances and even photographs.”

Derma Pen micro needling also treats deep wrinkles and creases both on the face and neck – a situation that some other rejuvenation treatments such as laser skin rejuvenation, chemical peels and microdermabrasion cannot correct.

Some patients opt to have the treatment on their hands to lessen the appearance of age spots, and improve the appearance of their hands. In addition to improvements in how the skin looks, patients also report improvements in how their skin feels. “

Skin tightens and firms as a byproduct of collagen induction therapy,” Davis said.

Additionally, blood flow to the site of treatment increase, bringing nutrients and oxygen with it. These vital elements are important for healing and benefit the appearance of the skin.

Patients are numbed before the procedure, and Davis uses the pen to go over the area of treatment. Derma Pens can go up to 2 millimeters below the skin, and the needles are adjusted for both the level of treatment and the area they are treating.

After the procedure, patients may be sore and the treated area will be red, similar to light sunburn. Sunscreen is a must after the procedure, cautions Davis. Patients should wear a high SPF sunscreen and avoid direct, prolonged exposure to the sun or about a week after having Derma Pen. This is due to old skin cells sloughing off as new skin cells are produced. Patients should also avoid applying makeup and harsh cleansers after the procedure – at least for several days. Davis cautions her patients to let their skin heal.

The number of Derma Pen treatments a patient will require depends on the condition of the skin in the area to be treated. Most patients undergo three to six treatments, with at least a 30-day break in between. Patients interested in Derma Pen micro needling should discuss the procedure with their physician or skin care specialist.
