When you think about plastic or cosmetic procedures, you might picture a woman improving her chest through a breast augmentation or removing wrinkles through Botox. But times have changed. While women are still the primary seekers of cosmetic procedures, it’s becoming much less taboo for men. Men undergoing cosmetic procedures is nothing new, but more and more are improving their appearances and opening up about it.
Most Popular Surgical Procedure for Men: Blepharoplasty
Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons show that the No. 1 plastic surgery procedure among men is currently blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. This procedure can help eyes appear more youthful and alert, according to Dr. Mayli Davis of Advanced Eyelid Surgery Center in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
“Excess skin or fat is removed from either the top, bottom or both eyelids. This can eliminate bags under the eyes or drooping eyelids,” she said. “The eyes are one of the first places that begin to show aging on the face, and many patients are surprised at how this simple procedure helps them look younger and more vibrant again.”
Other common cosmetic or plastic surgery procedures for men include liposuction, hair transplant surgery, neck-lifts, rhinoplasty and male breast reductions.
Non-Surgical Treatments Popular Among Men
Brotox, the new slang term for Botox for men, has seen a dramatic increase in recent years. In 2015, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons conducted a study that found that the number of men seeking botulinum toxin injections had risen 337 percent since 2000.
Social media, online dating and competition in the workplace are all factors that Davis believes are contributing to a rise in male cosmetic procedures.
“Our society has become increasingly visual with the emergence of social media and online dating. Even the workplace and job industries have turned visually centered with LinkedIn profiles featuring images instead of just a paper resume filled with text only,” she said.
The most popular places to request Botox injections among men are between the brows, on the forehead and around the eyes. The results are long lasting and only require a few touchups a year to maintain a wrinkle-free appearance.
Also popular are dermal filler such as Juvederm, Teosyal and Restylane, which are composed of hyaluronic acid and help restore skin’s volume, smooth out fine lines and rejuvenate the appearance of the face. Dermal fillers can be used to do what is referred to as a non-surgical nose jobs to reshape the nose without any incisions and can also be used to restore volume to the area under the eyes to create a more youthful and vibrant look.
