Old Makeup Is So Last Year

A new year means a lot of things: new opportunities, new resolutions and a new you. It also means it is probably time for new makeup! If you can’t remember the last time you treated yourself to new makeup or if you’re still using the products you bought years ago, it is time to find out what to toss. Dr. Davis encourages patients to regularly review their makeup stash and make sure they are using fresh products to protect both skin and eye health.

Foundation. Replace your foundation every year. Why? Foundation is applied to the face and is exposed to all the dirt, dead skin cells and germs on your skin.

Sponges and Beauty Blenders. These things also come into regular contact with your face and all the bacteria that live on your skin. As a result, we suggest replacing these items at least every three months or washing them frequently to remove dirt, bacteria, oil and dead skin (ew).

Makeup Brushes. Just like sponges and beauty blenders, makeup brushes often meet the bacteria, dirt and oil on your skin. The lifespan of makeup brushes can be between one and five years with regular cleaning. If you do not want to toss your brushes, we suggest cleaning them regularly and making sure they are thoroughly dry before using again. If you notice that the bristles of the brushes are becoming stiff, splayed or frayed, it’s best to replace.

Mascara. If mascara is a must, the best thing for your eyes is to replace it every three months. Yes, we know this sounds like a lot, but mascara is sticky and can transfer bacteria to your eyes. These bacteria can cause eye infections, sties and pink eye.

Blush. The lifespan of blush is between one and two years, depending on if you’re using a powder or cream. If you notice that your blush is getting darker over time, this is a good indication it is time to replace. Don’t forget to clean your blush brush regularly, too.

Eyeliner. Pencil eyeliners that can be sharpened are good for two years, but regularly sharpen them to “clean” and remove bacteria on the tip. Liquid liners need to be tossed after just three months because of the risk of infection and other eye issues.

Eyeshadow. One to two years for these products for powders, and just one year for creams. Like blush, if you notice your eyeshadow is getting darker over time, it’s time to pitch it! Replace the foam applicators regularly to keep your eyes healthy and germ-free.
