How’s your summer going? Enjoying all the fun the season brings, with pool parties, barbecues and trips to the beach? Are you going on vacation? Are you eating summer favorites like sno-cones and ice cream? While you’re enjoying the best of the season, we have another question to ask: Are you taking care of your skin? As you know, we are concerned about your skin year round, and we like to drop subtle (and not-so-subtle) tips about taking care of your skin (wear sunscreen!). So while we are in the dead heat of summer, here’s a gentle reminder about keeping your skin healthy so it looks great year round.
Step 1. Exfoliate. Why exfoliate? Exfoliation helps to get rid of dead, dirty and dull skin cells. This can help improve skin quality, appearance and hydration.
Step 2. Moisturize. Keeping your skin hydrated helps to keep it flexible, which means it also reduces the risk of developing wrinkles and creases.
Step 3. Drink water. This is Texas, and we are just now reaching the hottest part of the year, which means you need to reach for more water. High temperatures and more time in the sun can increase the chance of dehydration – which is dangerous for your body and bad for your skin. Drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day.
Step 4. Use sunscreen. Put sunscreen on every time you go outside. Don’t forget your face. If you don’t want to smooth on Coppertone all over your face, use a moisturizer that contains sunscreen – at least an SPF of 30!
Step 5. See Step 4. Not only put sunscreen on, but also reapply it regularly. Follow the indications on the bottle about how often the manufacturer suggests reapplication. Research has shown that most people forget to reapply!
Step 6. If you burn, treat. If you did forget to apply or reapply, and you suffered a sunburn, treat your skin. Reach for a cooling gel or aloe vera and apply liberally to prevent peeling and reduce redness and inflammation. If you do suffer sunburn or skip protecting your skin regularly, know you are increasing your risk of melanoma – and aging your skin prematurely.
Step 7. Treat the signs of aging. If you do notice sunspots, fine lines, wrinkles and creases setting in, treat them through a skin-rejuvenating treatment from Dr. Mayli Davis in Colleyville, Texas.
