What Is A Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a treatment done by a professional, usually with salicylic or glycolic acid, and a type of gauze, cotton ball, or brush, that they smooth over their skin. The skin that comes into contact with this chemical will then start to whiten. The skin will then begin to peel and those dead and dull skin cells will be removed.
After this, the next layer of skin will multiply and move to the surface, essentially creating a new layer of skin. Your body will also increase production of collagen, improving skin elasticity, making skin appear more youthful.
Does It Hurt?
When you think of chemicals you probably would associate them with a burn. This is different from a burn, the pain is similar to that of a stinging sensation. Afterwards, there may be some redness and soreness.
Benefits
Acne
Chemical peels are a great option for those with acne, scars, and other surface abnormalities. These marks, if they are located on the first layer of skin, can be reduced by the chemical peel. Plus, a chemical peel will ease current acne. The reason behind this is they will remove blackheads and unclog the pores. Some other treatments like lasers can cause an acne flare-up, an issue not common in peels. Plus, if the type of acid being used is salicylic, this type will rest in pores for a time after the peel and help keep them clear.
Reducing Fine Lines
Depending on which type of chemical peel you choose, they may be able to help reduce fine lines. A chemical peel can range from a mild to a deep. A deep peel is better for reducing fine lines. The difference is, however, they do take more time to heal. The reason behind this is that peel will reveal more healthy, youthful skin, reducing those fine lines on the surface.
Exfoliation
A milder form of a chemical peel is a great exfoliator. Common solutions to exfoliating include the usage of mineral based scrubs, usually consisting of ground nuts and crystals, while a mild chemical attempts to cleanse your skin. The issue with this is that your skin usually feels like you never did it in the first place. A chemical peel gets deeper and removes more dead skin than possible with a store-bought exfoliator.
Melasma
Melasma is a hyperpigmentary disorder that usually appears brown or bluish in color and in the form of freckles or patches. It is often resistant to certain treatments. Causes of melasma are most commonly related to fluctuations in hormones and are common in those who are pregnant or who have recently been pregnant. The benefits of a chemical peel for this type of skin condition is that it is able to get under this first layer of skin where the melasma is most prevalent and help reduce the appearance of these patches.
