Acne: It’s the Pits

It can be tempting to pick or squeeze blemishes. It can also be kind of weirdly satisfying – we love to binge on Dr. Pimple Popper videos, too. But, while picking or squeezing your blemishes or acne can cause temporary satisfaction, it can also result in scars, particularly a type of scar known as ice pick scars. Ice pick scars are deep, narrow scars that stem from severe cases of acne or squeezing and picking acne or blemishes.

Do you have the signs of ice pick scars? If you want to minimize the appearance of your ice pick scars or another type of facial scarring, Dr. Davis can help with Dermapen and microdermabrasion.

What Is Dermapen?

Dermapen is a skin-rejuvenation treatment designed to treat the appearance of:

  • Aging skin
  • Small creases
  • Hyperpigmentation, brown spots or freckles
  • Loose skin
  • Large pores
  • Stretch marks
  • Scars

Dermapen works by piercing the skin with a tiny needle. The small holes created by the Dermapen help to trigger the production of collagen, elastin and new skin cells. This results in improved skin quality and appearance. The new skin cells can help fill in ice pick scars, large pores, lines and creases. New skin cells can also help to even out uneven pigmentation.

In addition to stimulating to new skin cell and collagen production, the tiny holes created by Dermapen can help with the delivery of topically applied formulations that can help improve skin quality, too.

Microdermabrasion

In addition to Dermapen, we also offer microdermabrasion skin-resurfacing treatment, which can help reduce the appearance of ice pick scars.

Microdermabrasion works by removing the skin affected by the scars to facilitate the growth of new, healthier skin cells. Like the results of Dermapen, the skin cells can fill areas affected by acne scarring.

What Causes Acne Scars?

As we mentioned, picking or squeezing blemishes can cause scarring, but acne scars are more likely to happen to people who have severe acne.

Other risk factors for developing acne scars include:

  • Inflammatory acne
  • Cystic acne
  • Nodules
  • Putting off treatment for severe acne
  • Genetics

How to Prevent Acne Scarring

You can prevent acne scarring by:

  • Not picking, squeezing, popping or picking blemishes
  • Washing your face with oil-free and noncomedogenic (won’t clog pores) products
  • Avoiding touching your blemishes to avoid spreading blemish-causing bacteria
  • Consultation with a dermatologist to discuss a treatment plan for your acne
