Botox is a popular treatment for wrinkles and lines. It can also treat excessive sweating, muscle spasms, and migraines. While Botox may seem like an easy solution to aging skin, it is essential that you understand what exactly happens during the procedure before you decide whether or not this would be a good option for you.
How Botox Works
Botox utilizes neurotoxins that paralyze facial muscles. This causes wrinkles to smooth out, giving a more youthful appearance. Botox can also be used as a preventative measure to slow the formation of wrinkles. The neurotoxins are injected into specific problem areas around the face, such as the brow and forehead.
The Treatment
The treatment itself is relatively short, taking only around 15 minutes. You will be given a few tiny injections and can return to work or your normal activities right away. There is minimal to no downtime after the injections.
Results
The results of Botox will be visible almost immediately and will continue to improve over the next few days. The full effects will be seen around two weeks after the treatment. Results can last anywhere from three to six months, depending on your skin type and lifestyle.
Side Effects
Possible side effects of Botox vary from patient to patient; however, some can include the following:
- pain or swelling at the injection site
- bruising at the injection site
- drowsiness, fatigue, or temporary blurred vision
- flu-like symptoms
- crooked smile or drooling
Botox is FDA approved for the treatment of wrinkles. However, it is also used to treat several other conditions, such as excessive underarm sweating, excessive perspiration in hands and feet, and migraines associated with headaches or jaw pain.
Is Botox Painful?
Most patients do not report pain during Botox injections. Some have reported mild discomfort. However, this can usually be managed with numbing cream or ice.
Is Botox Safe?
Botox is considered a safe procedure when administered by a qualified Physician.
Who Should NOT Receive Botox Treatment?
People who have had an allergic reaction to any botulinum type A product should not receive BOTOX treatment. If you are pregnant, nursing, or planning on becoming pregnant in the next six months, and if you currently breastfeed your baby, then it is best not to receive Botox.
