Can Facial Exercises Help Tone the Face?

In a recent interview with beauty brand Birchbox, Meghan Markle, the American actress who made headlines for marrying Britain’s Prince Harry, shared that one of the ways she keeps her face looking so flawless is with facial exercises to keep her cheekbones toned and even help prevent drooping eyelids.

Facial exercises are nothing new. The idea behind them is that you work your face from the inside out, which tones facial muscles and stimulates collagen and elastin production. The outcome is, hopefully, a smoother and tighter appearance to skin and maybe even a younger and more sculpted complexion.

Here are a few of the most popular facial exercises:

The Brow Smoother

This facial exercise is designed to help with forehead lines. Place both hands on your forehead with your palms toward your face and your fingers spread slightly apart between your hairline and your eyebrows. Then, slide your hands outwards across your forehead toward your ears 10 times, relaxing between each repetition.

The V

This facial exercise is designed to help reduce puffy eyes, sagging eyelids and crow’s feet. Place each of your middle fingers on the inside corner of each eyebrow and place each index finger on the outside corner of each eyebrow, essentially forming a V with your fingers around each eye. Apply pressure through the fingers and look up, then raise your lower eyelids as if you are trying to squint. Relax.

Do this six to eight times and then squeeze your eyes closed for 10 seconds to finish the exercise.

The Flirty Eye

This facial exercise is designed to help lift drooping eyes. Place your index fingers under each eye, lengthwise each finger should be horizontal and pointing toward your nose on both sides. Then, open your mouth slightly and pull your lips over your teeth, like you’re trying to hide your lips in your mouth. Next, look up at the ceiling and open and close your eyelids in a fluttering motion for 30 seconds. Repeat a few times to finish the exercise.

Now that you’ve read about a few of these exercises, you might be wondering if they truly work. Experts disagree on the effectiveness of facial exercises, and since there have been no studies done to understand just how successful they can be, it’s hard to tell, said Dr. Mayli Davis of Advanced Eyelid Surgery Center in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.

“What we do know that works for problems like drooping eyelids is a simple surgery called blepharoplasty,” she said. “Not only does this procedure improve the appearance of the eyelids and overall face, but it can also help improve vision if the drooping or sagging of the eyelids has started to impair vision by extending over the pupil.”

Blepharoplasty corrects defects and deformities of the eyelids. It’s usually performed as an outpatient procedure, and recovery is generally quick and easy with only 10 to 14 days of bruising or swelling.
