Don’t Be Basic

Skin care products. They’re everywhere. It’s kind of hard to pass them up, too. When you see shelves in drugstores or your favorite beauty counter chock full of all those bottles of creams, lotions and potions, it’s natural to want all the things. But do you need them? While every product promises youth in a bottle, it’s hard to know what you really need. According to a recent article in SELF magazine, you don’t need most of it. In fact, it says you only need three things: a gentle cleanser, a moisturizer and a sunscreen.

Wait … What?

According to dermatologists interviewed by the magazine, you only need these three things, and using too many products can cause skin issues.

Cleanser. Cleanser is critical. It helps wash off the dirt, makeup, oil, dead skin cells and environmental pollution that end up on your face every day (gross, we know).

Moisturizer. Moisturizer is also vital to skin quality. This is because it helps maintain the skin’s protective barrier against germs and pollutants. Moisturizer also helps to keep the skin smooth, soft and flexible, which reduces the signs of aging and helps to prevent future signs of aging from developing.

Sunscreen. Sunscreen is arguably the most important of the three. It helps prevent skin cancer as well as sun damage such as uneven pigment, wrinkles and fine lines, which can make you appear older.

The Recommendations

The dermatologists interviewed by SELF say that the best way to use these three products is to wash with a gentle cleanser in the morning and then follow it up with a moisturizer and sunscreen. You can also combine the moisturizer and sunscreen into one product, but we suggest that you use one that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30.

The article also says to wash with cleanser at night and apply moisturizer.

But, What If You Need More?

What about serums? Undereye creams? Retinol? Those things still have their place, but the three basics will get you by.

But, is just getting by enough? If you really want to look great, anti-aging products and skin-rejuvenating services such as microdermabrasion, skin tightening and laser skin resurfacing have their place, too.

These products and treatments can eliminate or reduce the signs of aging – and in many cases may even help to put off signs of aging from settling in for a few more years.
