For years, having a freckled complexion was, well, frustrating for many women. But in recent years, freckles have become desirable due to celebrities such as Meghan Markle, Emma Stone and Julianne Moore. Some women have even opted to have “freckles” tattooed on their faces because they don’t have them naturally! While this may seem a little odd, it may have you thinking more about freckles and, in particular, their origin.

So, Where Do Freckles Come From?

The short answer is your genes. Just like your hair color or eye color, freckles come from your parents. Researchers have identified several genes that contribute to freckles, including MC1R, or the “red hair gene,” as red hair and freckles often go hand in hand.

Freckles and the Sun

The color of your skin is determined by the amount of melanin in your skin. So, the more melanin you have, the darker your skin. In some individuals, melanin can be more concentrated in some skin cells, which means freckles. When these cells are exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, freckles darken.

Freckle Facts

Freckles are pretty interesting. Here are some facts about freckles you might not know:

  • Freckles are also called ephelides.
  • Freckles are not the same as sun spots (lentigines) or moles.
  • No one is born with freckles; they begin to develop at about 2 or 3 years of age.
  • Some people lose their freckles with age.
  • Freckles can indicate how sensitive your skin is to the sun, as freckle darkness fluctuates when you’re exposed to UV rays. If your freckles come out more after sun exposure, your skin is more sensitive and your skin cancer risk is higher.
  • Freckles are not dangerous but should be monitored for abnormal changes. If you notice any changes in the size, color or border of a freckle, it’s worth it to get it investigated by your doctor or dermatologist.
