Do you wish you were like Cher? You know – you could turn back time? Well, unfortunately, turning back time and erasing mistakes is not possible. But, you can reverse the signs of aging and even put off a surgical face-lift with your new BFFs: dermal fillers. Dermal fillers are especially powerful when used in combination with other injectables, particularly Botox. Here’s what you need to know about your new friends.

What Are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectables designed to “fill” areas of the skin that are wrinkled or that have lost facial fat volume. The result is a smoother and fuller appearance. Dermal fillers are typically used around the mouth and nose to fill in laugh lines and other creases. They can also be used for the lips to give them a boost, too! Fillers are also great for filling in sunken cheeks and areas under the eyes.

Dermal fillers are typically temporary, which means you will have to get them touched up every six months to a year or so, depending on the product you choose.

Not Your Mom’s Fillers

If you’ve been afraid to try fillers because you don’t want duck lips or the puffy or over-filled look of fillers past, it’s OK. Dermal filler and filler techniques have been fine-tuned over the years. You can feel confident that you can get fillers now without the puffy after-effect. You’ll still look like you – but younger!

Which Filler Is Your Best Friend?

What filler works best for you depends on what you need and the goals of your treatment.

Hyaluronic acid-based fillers like Restylane, Juvederm and Belotero are made of hyaluronic acid, an element found in your body that is necessary to keep your skin cells plump and you looking youthful.

Collagen-based fillers are made from collagen found in purified cow skin. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein that is important for the body and supports the health of the skin. Collagen wrinkle fillers can be animal-based or be synthetically made. Collagen-based filters don’t last as long as hyaluronic-based filters.

Calcium hydroxylapatite-based filler products such as Radiesse are excellent for deeper wrinkles and last for a long time.

Poly-L-lactic acid-based fillers such as Sculptra can help stimulate collagen production in the body, which means not only filling in wrinkles, but also skin-tightening benefits.
