As the natural aging process occurs, skin begins to lose its elasticity. One place where that is often most noticeable is the eyes. If you’ve noticed your eyelids beginning to droop and you feel like it makes you look older, there are solutions!
Causes of Droopy Eyelids
As discussed above, the natural aging process can make the skin above and around the eyes begin to droop. The levator muscle is the muscle that raises the eyelid. After decades of use, the muscle may begin to stretch out and loosen over the years. This can cause the eyelid to begin to sag slightly, and in some cases it can become so relaxed it can begin to interfere with vision. However, aging is not the only cause of drooping eyelids. Eye injuries can also cause this condition.
For some, drooping eyelids, or ptosis, can be present during childhood due to problems with the development of the levator muscle. It’s also common in these situations for children to have other related eye conditions, such as eye movement and eye muscle problems.
Solutions for Droopy Eyelids
In most cases, a simple surgery is required to repair ptosis. During this procedure, the levator muscle is usually shortened and strengthened depending on the severity and symptoms of the condition.
Surgery for Droopy Eyelids
One of the things that sets Dr. Davis apart from other eye specialists is that many can perform blepharoplasty, which involves removing skin, muscle and/or fat from the eyelid to help with pstosis symptoms, but not many are skilled in ptosis repair, which actually involves changing the height of the eyelid. For some patients, depending on the severity of their condition, blepharoplasty may be sufficient.
To find out exactly which procedure would benefit your situation best, a consultation with Dr. Davis will help answer all of those questions and more.
