Dr. Davis helps her patients determine the best ways to keep their skin healthy and radiant. A big part of this is ensuring they’re using the right products for their skin. Understanding your skin type is crucial in selecting the right skin care products. In general, there are five primary skin types, each with their own unique needs.
Normal
People with a normal skin type have very minimal to no skin imperfections. Normal skin is usually soft and smooth with an even tone. Use gentle, but effective skin care products to maintain the normal balance of your skin.
Dry
Dry skin is thin and flaky with fine lines and occurs when oil glands don’t produce sufficient oil to moisturize and lubricate the skin. It’s often the result of age and environmental factors. Invest in a good moisturizer to keep skin hydrated and use a mild facial cleanser without alcohol to avoid excessive drying.
Oily
This skin type produces excess oil due to overactive sebaceous glands and is often prone to breakouts and blackheads. Choose soap-free cleansers to prevent clogged pores and reduce oil. For breakouts, look for cleansers or spot treatment ointments with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
Combination
Combination skin can be oily in some spots, like the T-zone area, and dry or normal in others. You may need to use a mixture of different products targeted for each area for the best results. For oily/dry skin, use a gel-based or mild foaming cleanser, and steer clear of medicated formulas.
Sensitive
Sensitive skin requires the most care and is often dry, thin and easily irritated. It can be the result of a skin condition or allergies. Selecting mild products, such as fragrance-free cleansers and moisturizers, is key. Use a very gentle cleanser specially formulated to soothe sensitive skin, and avoid products with harsh ingredients that can aggravate the skin.
