It may seem like closing your eyes will be enough to protect them from the sun’s rays or the UV lights used in indoor tanning salons. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case. Eye health is even more of a concern when it comes to the use of tanning beds, which research has shown expose the eyes to 100 times greater UV radiation than the sun. Why is this a problem? Well, it can cause serious damage to the eyes.
Photokeratisis
Sometimes referred to as a sunburn on the eye, this temporary issue causes pain, swelling, tearing and hazy or decreased vision. It can also feel as if sand or dirt is in the eyes. A topical solution prescribed by a doctor usually repairs the eyes from this damage.
Cataracts
Although cataracts are often associated with old age, exposure to the sun or the harsh UV rays from tanning beds can cause clouding or yellowing of the eyes. It can make it difficult to see clearly, and colors may become distorted.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in those over 60, but young people can suffer from it too as a result of indoor tanning without proper eye protection. It occurs when the vision is gradually damaged and can even make reading difficult.
Even though no one wants to wear the goggles while tanning, closing your eyes isn’t enough to keep them safe. The skin on the eyelids is thin, and damaging rays easily penetrate them and wreak havoc on the eyes themselves.
