A research team from the University of Rhode Island has discovered that extracts from red maple leaves may be the key to youthful, glowing skin. Their research shows that the extract may act as a protector for elastin, which plays an integral role in keeping skin looking youthful, smooth and full.
So how does it work? The research team told Allure magazine in an interview that the compound in the red maple leaf called “glucitol-core-containing gallotannins” inhibits elastase, an enzyme that breaks down the elastin that our skin needs to stay firm and youthful. Wrinkles are caused as a result of diminishing levels of fat, collagen and elasticity in the skin that occurs as we age. If we can prevent the loss of these important skin-supporting elements, we can perhaps prevent some of the effects of aging on our skin.
Research is still very new on this topic, so you won’t find maple leaf extract products on store shelves yet. In the meantime, here are a few simple things you can do to help keep skin youthful for now:
- Drinks lots of water. Hydration plays a huge role in skin health.
- Eat lots of fruits and vegetables. Almost everyone underestimates the role of diet in skin health.
- Protect your skin from the sun. Sunscreen is important, but it’s not enough on its own. Limiting sun exposure is best.
- Use natural beauty products and avoid things with questionable ingredients.
- Find ways to combat stress and anxiety – your skin will thank you.
- Use a moisturizer with SPF daily. Even if you think your skin doesn’t need any.
- Get plenty of sleep. Use a silk pillowcase or try sleeping on your back for your best skin.
- Increase your vitamin C. Research has actually shown it can help in the production of collagen.
- Get exercise daily. Not only does it help with stress and anxiety, but it also helps release toxins in the body.
