You have probably heard the adage, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy wealthy and wise.” But does going to bed early help ward off wrinkles? They don’t call it beauty sleep for nothing. Dr. Davis believes that getting good sleep along with a few other healthy habits can help keep you feeling and looking great.
- Sleep position. Did you know that the position you sleep in can actually contribute to the development of wrinkles? If you are a side or stomach sleeper, you may be making wrinkles inadvertently as your face comes in contact with your pillow and leaves sleep lines on your face and neck. This contact creates pressure that can break down collagen and elastin in your skin, and lead to wrinkles. Switching to sleeping on your back does not put this pressure on your face and reduces your risk of wrinkles.
- Use a quality night time moisturizer. Select a night time moisturizer that contains retinol. Retinol comes from Vitamin A and increases your collagen production. Increased collagen production helps prevent wrinkles and keeps your skin looking young. Moisturizers containing hyaluronic acid can also help keep your skin firm.
- Daytime moisturizers matter, too. Be sure to select a quality moisturizer or make up for your day, too. Make sure your choice has an SPF of at least 30 and can block a broad spectrum of ultraviolet rays.
- Don’t skimp on sleep. Ensure you are getting a full night’s sleep each night. That’s seven to eight hours. When you do not get enough sleep, your body becomes stressed. Stress increases the production of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol can dry out your skin and cause inflammation which results in aging. Also, shorting yourself on sleep causes dehydration, which leaves you with a dull or dry appearance.
- Stay hydrated. Drinking eight to ten glasses of water every day will keep your skin hydrated and elastic. Staying hydrated and elastic prevents cracking which can lead to dirt settling into pores and results in blemishes.
