Wrinkles. They can become one of our greatest fears as we age. However, wrinkles are a natural part of aging and oftentimes become the most prominent on sun-exposed skin, such as the face, neck, hands, and forearms. While wrinkles are not something to be afraid of, there are some distinct causes of wrinkles and ways that they can be avoided.
This article looks at what wrinkles are and what causes them.
What Are Wrinkles?
Wrinkles are lines that form on your skin. They’re a natural part of your body’s aging process. Wrinkles can appear as folds, creases or ridges. They’re most often found on your face, neck and arms, but wrinkles can appear anywhere on your body.
The amount of wrinkles an individual will have in later life is further influenced by biological, genetic, and environmental factors. Over time, the dermis loses both collagen and elastin, so skin gets thinner and has trouble getting enough moisture to the epidermis. The fat in the subcutaneous layer that gives skin a plump appearance also begins to disappear, the epidermis starts to sag, and wrinkles form.
What Causes Wrinkles?
Wrinkles are caused by a combination of factors — some you can control, others you can’t. Here is a list of the most frequent and popular causes of wrinkles:
- Age
As you get older, your skin naturally becomes less elastic and more fragile. Decreased production of natural oils dries your skin and makes it appear more wrinkled.
Fat in the deeper layers of your skin diminishes. The dermis has a network of elastin and collagen fibers, which offer support and elasticity. This causes loose, saggy skin and more-pronounced lines and crevices.
- Exposure to UV Light
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can result in premature aging of your skin, also known as photoaging. Exposure to UV light breaks down collagen fibers and leads to the production of abnormal elastin.
Without the supportive connective tissue, your skin loses strength and flexibility. Skin then begins to sag and wrinkle prematurely.
- Smoking
Smoking can accelerate the normal aging process of your skin, contributing to wrinkles. Researchers found that smoking causes a reduction in the production of new collagen. Decreased collagen results in the development of wrinkles.
- Environmental Factors
Pollutants in the air in your environment can cause your body’s collagen to break down as pollution enters your pores.
