What to Do About a Drooping Eyelid

Call Us Today: 817.778.4444

In our fast-paced lives, the last thing we need is something that makes us look more tired than we already are. Drooping or sagging eyelids can create the illusion of tiredness or premature aging. In some cases, it can even cause what’s referred to as a ‘lazy eye’ or amblyopia.

Ptosis, or blepharoptosis, is the medical term for eyelid drooping. It occurs when the upper eyelid droops or sags lower than it should. It can happen in both eyes or on just one side.

What Can Cause a Drooping Eyelid?

In some cases, a child can be born with ptosis. For others, it may develop over time due to many causes such as:

  • Weakened muscles
  • Damaged nerves
  • Loosened skin
  • Normal aging process

How to Fix a Drooping Eyelid?

Treatment for ptosis is dependent on the cause. If disease or irregularity is discovered, treatment of the condition may correct any eyelid drooping. If it’s simply due to aging or congenital, there are cosmetic treatments that can help. Sometimes droopy eyelids can affect your vision, and this makes the surgery necessary for both cosmetic and functional reasons.

Blepharoplasty

Often performed as an outpatient surgery, blepharoplasty is essentially an eye lift procedure which removes extra skin, muscle, and fat that is causing eyelids to droop or sag. Sometimes the levator muscles are tightened if they’re one of the reasons for the condition. This procedure can correct vision problems and even help you look younger. Healing time can be incredibly quick in many cases, and any scarring from surgery is very easily hidden.
